Man Jailed in UK for Spreading HIV

HIV_NewsA ZIMBABWEAN man has been jailed for four-and-half years in Leicester, England, after infecting his girlfriend with HIV.

The 32-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was "utterly selfish and irresponsible", a judge said during sentencing on Thursday.

A jury convicted him of inflicting grievous bodily harm upon a partner, with whom he had a child.

He failed to tell her he was HIV positive during their two-and-a-half year relationship, which began when she was 16.

She regularly had unprotected sex with him, between 2006 and 2008, without realising she was at risk - and only found out when medical staff at a clinic told her.

Once the girl knew she was infected, the man urged her to sleep with other people so they wouldn't be alone in having HIV, the Leicester Crown Court heard.

Sentencing, Judge Michael Pert QC told the man: "You found out in 2004 that you were HIV positive. You were angry and bitter about that.

"You were then utterly selfish and irresponsible and, in that sense, a dangerous man. You have sex with women, with little or no regard for their safety, and don't regard it as your problem.

"We've heard evidence from three others about your attitude towards them, which was exactly the same.

"The public health services were at their wits' end as to how to deal with you and the prosecution only came about because they got the police involved.
