On Wednesday 4th September HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust will launch a new monthly ‘Men Only Testing’ (MOT) clinic at its centre on Manor Road, Coventry. The walk-in clinic, which will take place between 4pm and 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month, will offer rapid HIV testing services in a friendly and supportive café-style environment. The charity hopes that the initiative will encourage more local men to come forward for a test.
Trained staff will be available throughout the MOT clinic to offer rapid finger-prick HIV tests and anyone who attends will also be able to have an informal chat with staff over tea, coffee and cake. People who take a test will get their results within 20 minutes and a team of staff will provide support before and after the test, as well as free condoms, and information and advice on safer sex.
Figures released by the Health Protection Agency last year revealed that there were 6,390 people living with HIV in the West Midlands in 2011. Gay and bisexual men remain one of the groups most at risk from HIV, yet a quarter of those living with HIV locally still don’t know they have the virus and are therefore at risk of serious health problems.
Lorraine Galatowicz, Centre Manager for Terrence Higgins Trust in Coventry, said: “We know that getting tested can seem daunting. We hope this new initiative will encourage people to drop in and take a test in a friendly and comfortable environment where they can get to know the team. Knowing your status is a great way to get peace of mind and you can also talk to our team about staying safe in the future. And for those who test positive, getting tested is the key that unlocks the support and treatment they need.
“Our message to gay and bisexual men is if you haven’t had a test in a while, or you’re worried you may have put yourself at risk, why not come along and find out more.”
The MOT clinic will take place between 4pm and 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month at Terrence Higgins Trust’s centre at 10 Manor Road, Coventry, CV1 2LH.
